Sculpting and Throwing
Hand-built designs are created using coils and slabs of porcelain, then detail work is added with hand tools. These techniques allow us to create unconventional and original designs. Wheel-thrown designs are created using a pottery wheel. This technique allows us to create symmetrical and uniform pieces of pottery such as bowls, plates, and mugs.
2
Hand Painted Underglaze Designs
The initial bisque firing turns the clay into ceramic. We use underglaze to hand paint original designs on each piece. One of our favorite ways to apply underglaze is using a small paint brush and applying many layers to insure the brightest pigmentation. Most of our designs are free handed directly on the piece of bisqued clay. After the underglaze process is complete the piece receives another bisque firing to set the underglaze.
3
Glazing and Firing
After the pottery is fired for a second time, we glaze it! Most of our underglaze pieces get a clear glaze. This adds a strong glassy exterior to pieces and makes them more durable. The true depth of the underglaze colors are revealed after the higher temperature of the glaze firing. Then we have a finished piece!
